Can't Train - Won't Train!
Mel Richards – Personal Trainer & Sports Therapist
Much of the feedback I receive is from many of you who would love to follow a training programme but, for all sorts of reasons, just can't. In this article we take a look at some of those reasons and see if we can't provide that extra bit of encouragement that you need to get out and improve your life.
The number one reason is lack of time. There's a lot of evidence which shows that in order to make a difference to our fitness and to improve our life expectancy, we need to exercise vigorously for only 20 minutes, 3 times a week. I won't lie and suggest that this means that you only need to find an extra hour each week, as extra time will be needed for getting changed, warming up, cooling down and enjoying your improved health! However, it still adds up to less than 2 hours a week. Take a look at your life; if you really can't make that much time in a week you obviously have a job – and it's probably the wrong one!
The number 2 reason centres around worries over health, including back pain, asthma, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis and arthritis. All of these conditions have serious implications for exercise, but all of them may also be improved with a properly structured fitness training programme. The key is to get medical advice before starting and to get professional advice in putting an appropriate programme together.
The third most quoted reason for not training is cost; simply not being able to afford the clothing, equipment, gym membership, etc. At the risk of putting myself out of business, I'm going to let you in on a secret: You can spend as much on fitness training as you want; if you want to spend nothing at all that is exactly what it will cost – so long as you are prepared to follow your naked, shoe-less training programme in the privacy of your own home! More realistically, for a small investment you can get a decent pair of training shoes and be well on the way to improved health and fitness.
If you are a penniless diabetic with a demanding young family and a very busy job, you probably won't be convinced that you should be exercising - and you probably won't be reading this article anyway! Anyone else should contact me for free, no obligation advice.
